August 2013 Archives

One of the first freelance assignments I did for the Detroit News was a photo story on a rowing club in Detroit. The year was 1980.  I remember waking at 4:00 am to get out to the river where the dedicated young men trained every morning at sunrise to avoid heavy shipping traffic on the Detroit River.

Recently a brother of one of the rowers found me online. He was looking for a copy of the tearsheet from the newspaper.  I ended up reviewing all my negatives and contact sheets and scanning a good number of the images.  Here's a small sample of that photo story.

A couple interesting stories on the industry.

The New York Times reports that print magazines sales continue to sag, and from Time, some photographers are destroying their old negatives.  I would find it very difficult to destroy my negatives going back 35 years.  I wonder how photographers growing up in the digital age feel about their own digital files.
